INTRODUCTION

The Blue pottery is a misnomer as it doesn’t contain clay. This form of art was basically originated in Persia came to Jaipur in early 19th century, when one of its rulers Sawai Ram Singh-II (1835 -1880) setup a school of art and encouraged artists from all over the country to come and settle here. Blue pottery has seen several ups and downs in its life span of almost 250 years. There was a time when it was about to vanish from Jaipur. Efforts of several concerned people like Smt. Kamala Devi Chattopadhaya and Rajmata Gaytri Devi helped to revive this dying art. 

 

 Jaipur blue pottery, made out of a similar fruit material to Egyptian faience, is glazed and low-fired. No clay is used: the ‘dough’ for the pottery is prepared by mixing quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth), borax, gum and water.  Another source cites Katira Gond powder (a gum), and saaji (soda bicarbonate) as ingredients.
